One of the fundamental goals and principles of Inspirability is to run its own Lay Led Self Management course, and to develop a post course support structure that will not only help those who have attended the Inspirability Support Course, but will enable those who have attended a Chronic Disease Self Management Course or Expert Patients Programme to build on and develop the goals that they have set themselves In November 2004 Inspirability received its first major funding Grant from the National Lottery under the Awards for All Banner for £5000 to develop and deliver both types of Courses and train the necessary tutors. We were able to obtain a licence to run the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self Management Course through the LMCA, and although we had several trained CDSMC tutors as members, they were too far away to assist in running a course in Hampshire.
Due to the availability of volunteers and to find a suitable training course within the region, it was not until September 2005 that we were able to send three people onto a training course for Chronic Disease Self Management (CDSM), which was run under the auspices of the Expert Patients Programme. All three who attended the EPP Tutor Training Course are now able to deliver under support of an accredited Tutor.
Following our first public meeting in April 2005 Inspirability were able to progress with the development of the Inspirability Support Course, which was in turn sponsored by a Global Grant from The Partnership (European Social Fund). This enabled us to provide a free course and was launched in November 2005 as part of Ask About Medicines Week National Campaign.
Since the Pilot course of the ISC was run from November 2005 to February 2006, it has been maintained as an ongoing support course and has now been delivered in a variety of venues and its success has been met with a further Grant from the European Social fund which will help continue its growth throughout 2007 and beyond. The success of the Inspirability Support Course has been recognised, described by one correspondent as a life philosophy and we are currently in detailed discussions with several other charities who are looking to set up their own brand of Support Course in our style to enable them to offer real and effective post course support.
